SciFun Holidays: Tanabata

  • Museum at Prairiefire 5801 West 135th Street Overland Park, KS, 66223 United States (map)

Join us from Noon to 4 pm as we celebrate Tanabata! The Chinese Qixi Festival is the source of the Japanese celebration Tanabata, often called the Star Festival. It honors the coming together of the gods Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are symbolized by the constellations Altair and Vega, respectively. Legend has it that these lovers are separated by the Milky Way and are only permitted to reunite annually on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. Although Tanabata falls on different dates in different parts of the nation, the first celebrations start on July 7 of the Gregorian calendar. The festivities take place on a number of days in July and August. We will have a fun paper lantern craft for the young and young at heart as well as Origami with Archie and face painters!
