JAM Sessions: Invertebrates in the Soil

JAM Sessions: Invertebrates in the Soil

If you dig in a patch of dirt, what do you find?  Depending on where you dig, you will likely find different living things crawling in and around your sample.  What would you expect to find in a sample of wetland soil vs, say, a sample of sandy soil?  If you think about what all living things need to survive, this can give you clues to answer this question.

In this JAM, you will look closely at samples of soil collected from different habitats.  While we often barely notice what is living under our feet, the tiny soil invertebrates play a huge role in the diversity and health of the habitats we interact with everyday.

JAM Sessions: Sprouting Seeds

What soil nutrients do plants need to grow their best? If you are a gardener, sometimes you have to wait what seems like a long time before plants begin to poke their leaves and stems through the soil and into daylight to find out. If you do this enough and you do some research, though, you can figure out 1) what nutrients certain plants need, and 2) what supplements may help them grow healthier before you ever put seeds in the ground!  In this life-science activity,  you will set up and conduct an experiment to determine whether seeds will sprout faster in soil mixed with coffee grounds or just “regular” soil and learn a little about how seeds turn into plants.

JAM Sessions: Symbiotic Relationships in Nature

Spring has begun, and you may have noticed that birds are singing their songs again. You may have noticed the first flower blooms of the season. Take a close look inside the flowers, and you will likely see an insect visiting that flower. Flowers and insects have had a very close relationship with each other for a very long time…dating back to when dinosaurs were alive! We call this type of relationship a symbiotic relationship, and the relationship between insects and flowers is just one of many examples in nature. In this JAM, you will learn how the organisms in these interesting associations help one another.

SciFun Camp - Earth Day Cleanup

The weather is warming up, and plants and animals everywhere have emerged from their winter slumber.  You may know that April 22nd is called Earth Day.  It is a day to celebrate nature and learn how to protect the planet’s habitats.  It is our one home, and we all need to look after it.

In honor of Earth Day, you will learn how to care for natural habitats and why they are important.  We will tour our wetlands and investigate different habitats and the plant/animal interactions that are important for their health.  We will watch for unique wetland wildlife, such as the Red-wing blackbird.  In the afternoon, weather permitting, we will spend even more time outside and have the chance to get a little dirty and work on our butterfly garden!

JAM Sessions: Build Your Own Water Filter

JAM Sessions: Build Your Own Water Filter

We all rely on clean, drinkable water to survive. (Remember that most of our body is water.)  The water in our bodies must be replenished by drinking plenty of it during the day. How do we get water that we can drink? The water that comes to us from our environment is not usually drinkable—it must be treated to remove harmful substances in it. One type of treatment involves filtration. Filtration removes substances and microscopic organisms that float in the water, as well as some substances that are dissolved in it. Using materials from the pet and hardware stores, you can construct your own water filtration device to see how this treatment process works.

JAM Sessions: Film Canister Rockets

How do rockets travel into space? You may know that it takes fuel to simply get a rocket off the ground and that the rocket also needs to escape the Earth’s gravity to actually get out of our orbit…which requires a lot of fuel! Fuel can, and has been, made in different ways to generate the forces required to lift rockets. In this aero engineering-themed JAM, you will learn how fuel helps generate these forces—by launching a film canister. You will use two simple ingredients to make your fuel, change the ratios after each launch, and make observations about how the changes in fuel ingredients affects their distance traveled.

SciFun Camp: Planet Pioneers (K-2nd) (Day 1 of 5)

Earth is our only home for now, but that could be changing soon.  According to NASA, astronauts might land on Mars to explore it as early as the 2030s.

For centuries, people have wondered about other planets and what we might find there if we visited them.  If you were suddenly transported to an unknown, alien world, how would you survive?  What’s the first thing you would do?  How would you make use of any raw materials your planet has?  Should you even go, or would it be too dangerous?  If we did go, would we just end up damaging the planet?

In this summer camp, you will come up with ideas that could answer these questions.  You will conduct experiments, make crafts, and learn what it might be like to be among the first to step on another planet.

For students entering grades K - 2nd grade

Drop-off for camps is from 8:30-9:00 and pick-up is from 3:00-3:30.

For students entering grades 3rd - 5th grade

Drop-off for camps is from 8:30-9:00 and pick-up is from 3:00-3:30.

JAM Sessions: Misunderstood Animals - Bats

Did you know that bats live in Kansas?  What do you think bats do in our native habitats, and where is the best place to find them?  There are a few different species native to Kansas, and part of what makes these animals mysterious is the fact that they are nocturnal.  Being nocturnal creatures, though, makes them a unique piece of the ecological puzzle.

There are also myths and misconceptions about bats - think vampire bats! - that leads to misunderstandings about these animals.  In this JAM, we will learn what makes these animals unique and beneficial to their habitats and to humans.

SciFun Camp: Digging Up the Past (K-2nd) (Day 1 of 5)

Have you ever found a fossil? Were you able to identify it? Before fossils were formally studied only hundreds of years ago, someone may have identified your fossil as a preserved dragon bone or even a bolt of lightning turned to stone!

We’ve come a long way in our understanding of what fossils are, where we can find them, and what they can tell us about Earth’s past environments. In this paleontology summer camp, we will explore ancient organisms and the environments they lived in. You will learn where to find fossils and how to tell, just by looking at how well preserved it is, how the plant or animal may have died. We will also learn about some of the most famous fossil-finding sites in the world, as well as how to dig for fossils yourself.

For students entering grades K - 2nd grade

Drop-off for camps is from 8:30-9:00 and pick-up is from 3:00-3:30.

JAM Sessions: Ice Cream in a Bag

Anybody up for some ice cream? Following the steps in this activity, you can make your own. July is a great time to enjoy some cold, refreshing ice cream. As with any kind of cooking and food making, there is science involved. There are chemical changes that happen when making ice cream, such as changes of state and the effect of adding substances that lower the freezing temperature of water. And in the end, you get to eat your science!

SciFun Camp: Marine Science (K-2nd) (Day 1 of 5)

Learning about oceans and ocean weather might sound strange given that we are in the middle of the country, but you may remember that Kansas was covered by an ocean multiple times. We have only fossils left to tell us about our ancient marine past, but there are plenty of modern oceans around the world to study.

In this oceanography camp, we’ll learn what makes ocean environments unique from land environments and how vitally important oceans are to life all around the planet. Approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in oceans, so it’s not difficult to imagine the impact they have, whether it’s hurricanes causing damage on coastlines, waves shaping huge rock structures, or plankton releasing oxygen. You will also learn about the impacts humans have made on oceans and what ocean scientists are doing to try and protect them for future generations.

For students entering grades K - 2nd grade

Drop-off for camps is from 8:30-9:00 and pick-up is from 3:00-3:30.

JAM Sessions: What’s Swimming in your Creek?

When you think of a wetland (maybe a marsh, swamp, or small creek flowing from a pond), what living things come to mind?  Most of you can probably name a few large animals and at least one or two plants.  Did you know, though, that these large living organisms actually depend on tiny, even microscopic, plants and animals to survive.  Without them, a wetland would not function the way it does.

In this natural science JAM, you will each be given some sampling tools for collecting specimens in our creek water behind the museum.  You’ll observe your “catch” through microscopes and learn about the amazing tiny things swimming in the creek!

SciFun Camp: Junior Biologist (K-5th) (Day 1 of 5)

What makes something living vs. nonliving?  The answer is probably harder to pin down than you think.  In fact, there are still biologists today that debate over this question.  This is just one of the questions you will attempt to answer as you learn about the different living organisms around the world.  Closer to home, there is a variety of life just behind the museum in our wetland and prairie habitats to observe and study.

In this biology camp, we will learn what makes the Earth so unique from any other planet we know of (so far): its huge abundance of life.  From the tiniest bacterium, to blue whales, to a network of fungi that spreads for miles around its center of growth, the Earth is full of life.  You will take a close look at organisms, both past and present, that can be found just in and around our museum.  You will learn how to identify them as well as learn what they can tell us about our environment.

JAM Sessions: Sketching From Nature

Think of the last picture of a plant or an animal you saw in a book - was it a photograph or a drawing?  We are all used to seeing images of nature through photographs in our books, magazines, and videos.  Photography is a pretty young field, and early scientists couldn’t simply pull out a phone and snap a picture!  So, how did they record the tiny details of natural objects?  In this natural history JAM, we’ll take a look at some of the earliest drawings, even from ancient Roman and Greek times, of plants and animals these early scientists made.  We will also go on our own exploration along the wetlands trail to find objects to sketch.

JAM Sessions: Science of the Cicada Symphony

We are now in the dog days of summer, the hottest part of the year.  It is no surprise, then, that the noisy cicadas you’re hearing are called dog day cicadas!  These are fascinating insects, and their calls seem to instantly bring warm summer evenings to mind.  There are several species that fall into this group - and did you know that you and actually identify the different species by their song?

In this JAM, you will learn how and why cicadas make their calls and how they can be so loud!  We’ll test our knowledge of cicada calls and walk along the wetlands trail for observation…possibly even handling.  (They are harmless!)

SciFun Camp - Engineering: Rube Goldberg Machines (day 5 of 5)

Do you like to know how machines work?  Even our most intricate modern machines boil down to a handful of basic simple devices, such as the lever and pulley.  You encounter these simple machines in your daily lives, such as when you open a car door (lever) to hop in and go for a ride.

On the first day of this multi-day camp, we will learn about all of the simple machines and how to construct them.  From then on, you will use this knowledge to construct a Rube Goldberg Machine.  These contraptions use multiple simple machines chained together to accomplish a task, and you will work as a team to create a machine to perform a special task!

For elementary school ages

Drop-off for camps is from 8:00-8:20 and pick-up is from 3:30-4:00.

Think about all of the machines you use on any given day.  How do you think you would do without them?  Our automated/electronic machines are pretty new, but there are a lot more objects that don’t require batteries or electricity that humans have relied on for hundreds of thousands of years.

In this camp, you will learn about different types of machines that humans have used and how they work - dating all the way back to the first hand tools made from rocks.

JAM Sessions: Science of Animal Camouflage

How many animals do you think you can spot on a nature walk?  Of course, it will depend a lot on where you are.  You’ll likely find more things at a state park than you will in your backyard.  Still, there are probably a lot of things to see in seemingly unlikely places…but those things are more likely to see you first because they blend into their environment!

In this JAM, you will learn about camouflage.  You may know what camouflage is, but what makes certain patterns work so well in one environment and so poorly in another?  Something else to think about: what happens when you take a camouflaged object from land and move it into the water?  You will look at different camouflaged specimens, make your own camouflage animal patterns, and explore what makes them unique.

SciFun Camp - Science of the Senses

Think about the activities you do in a day, or even just in the morning when you get ready for school.  What senses do you use?  If you made a list of all the things you encounter even before arriving at school, how late ng do you think it would be?  Our senses are incredibly important to us, and it’s easy to forget how much we rely on them to navigate our day.

In this camp, we will learn about the five senses.  You’ve heard of them before, but we will conduct experiments that let us explore how they actually work.  As a bonus, we will also learn how our sense of sight can trick us by checking out brain illusions.

JAM Sessions: Science of Sound

Do you play a musical instrument?  Do you sing?  Each instrument (and voice) produces a unique sound that can usually be differentiated from one another.  For example, the sound of a bassoon is very different from a flute, which is very different from a violin.  This is partly due to how high or low a sound is (pitch), but also the sound quality (timbre) and other factors.

In this JAM, you will learn what sound is at the most basic level.  With this foundational understanding, we will explore the different ways in which sound can be produced and why these variations result in the huge varieties of sounds we encounter in our everyday lives.

SciFun Camp - Spiders and other Non-Insects

If you’ve come to any nature-related camps before, you know that a walk around our wetlands usually involves seeing insects.  They are very common animals - in fact, one quarter of all described species.on the planet is a beetle!  But what about the other invertebrates?  Spiders, mites, isopods (“rollie pollies”) and other invertebrates deserve attention too.

In this camp, we will learn about the “non-insects”.  Many of these little animals are also predators of insects, which helps keep their populations from getting too large and overwhelming their environment.  This makes them important for biocontrol, which we will do an activity for.

What’s your favorite sci-fi movie?  Did you ever wonder if the gadgets and advanced technologies you see in the movies could exist one day, or even already exist?  Well, it turns out some of these technologies featured in movies actually went on to become real...or at least somewhat real.

While we haven’t invented time travel (yet?), there are some cool sci-fi technologies we can explore and experiment with in this camp.  Learn how to control magnetic fields, hover objects above ground, and make a certain glowing sword.  Even the things and ideas that have so far not come to pass - think telepathy, teleporting humans, bending space and time and traveling through a wormhole, bringing back dinosaurs - are interesting and fun to think about!

Do your parents tell you not to play with your food?  Most of the time, that is good advice!  Sometimes, though, there are activities and experiments you can do that encourage you to do the opposite…like building a vehicle out of food!  You’ve probably done friction experiments with moving objects before, but this experiment is pretty unique.

You will design and build your own racing “cars” using different kinds of fruits and vegetables.  You get to choose which ones you think will work best for different components of your car.  What would work best for wheels?  How will you make an axle?  Finally, you will test your cars on ramps with different surfaces.
