Have you ever watched insects seem to dance and whirl around the surface of a still body of water?  That is because water has a sort of film on top of it!  Some insects are adapted to gliding on this thin film, allowing them to move around without falling in.

In this JAM activity, you will learn how this thin film of water creates tension, called surface tension, and what kinds of experiments you can do with it.  Simple liquid dish soap can break this surface tension, and you will observe how this creates motion to propel a boat!  We'll start with a demonstration using milk and food coloring, and then we will build boats out of foam that can move along a tray of water...without touching the boat!

Class is at 10:15 am

PLEASE NOTE:

  • We require a 24 hour cancellation notice for Little Explorers Club and JAM Sessions reservations via emailing info@visitthemap.org. Please include the name on the reservation, number of students, date and time of the class.

  • Please help create an outstanding learning environment by limiting disruptions in the classroom!

  • Parents are, of course, always welcome to remain in class but should a parent choose to step out, we have provided a seating area just outside the classrooms. Parents and siblings are also welcome to explore our Discovery Room or the rest of the Museum until the class concludes.
