It’s been a hot summer. Hopefully, you’ve been drinking plenty of water! Water is essential to life on Earth, and it makes up nearly two thirds of the planet’s surface. You probably know that most of this water is in the form of saltwater from the oceans; only a small fraction of our water comes rivers and glaciers. These freshwater sources are what we rely on for our drinking water. With fresh, drinkable water so accessible to us here in the US, it’s easy forget that many people around the world do not have easy access to this precious resource. In fact, many children have to walk for hours from a village to a river to collect water.
Instead of walking to a river, one solution is to build a system that transports water from a central source to multiple sources over a distance. Over two thousand years ago, the ancient Romans mastered the use of aqueducts to transport water to distant locations. In this activity, you will be tasked with figuring out how to build your own system of aqueducts to transport water from a central source (a large bucket) to multiple villages (small bowls).
Class is at 10:15 am
PLEASE NOTE:
We require a 24 hour cancellation notice for Little Explorers Club and JAM Sessions reservations via emailing info@visitthemap.org. Please include the name on the reservation, number of students, date and time of the class.
